So, with 2 months to go, this wedding has surprisingly been pretty drama-free as far as participants go. My bridesmaids are perfect. The groomsmen are cognizant but nonexistent. My parents and his parents are off in their own little worlds.
Until now.
Drama has come, and it’s the worst kind because it has nothing to do with the wedding, but it could effect its atmosphere in not-so-pleasant ways. I can’t go into intimate details, but let’s just say there’s a small custody battle and Dan’s divorced parents, while normally on friendly terms, have recently dropped some sort of iron curtain because of it. Of course, we didn’t discover this until we called Dan’s grandma after his mom didn’t answer her phone all weekend. And she didn’t answer her phone because she changed her phone number (and email address.) Of course.
She changed her phone number two months before the wedding and didn’t tell us?! Things like kill lesser daughter-in-laws-to-be! She’s five hours away from us and paying for the photographer, and she cuts off all means of communication. And of course, the photographer is requiring his initial deposit so he can buy his plane ticket ASAP, and there’s no way to reach the source of his paycheck. Nothing looks more reliable than telling your photographer that you can’t get the money because the groom’s mother has decided that her son isn’t her top priority anymore.
Of course, Dan explained later that she also moved without telling him once, so I guess it’s not unexpected. But it is to me. My family doesn’t go out of town without telling me 10 numbers where I can reach them. The entire concept feels like something out of a nightmare, it’s so absurd.
And now we have to worry about the groom’s only solid guests. Will they talk to each other? Will I have to put half of the groom’s party on the bride’s side of the aisle? Will Sim Park be the site of DeGroot WWII? How on earth do you handle poor parenting 27 years and going strong?
Wow, guys. Just…wow.
